Anguilla’s stunning haven

70 Rooms

The visually stunning Belmond Cap Juluca — think white Greco-Moorish façades set against an abundance of tropical plants — is a legitimate Caribbean haven. This is true now more than ever due to its recent multimillion-dollar refurbishment that included new guest room furnishings, Frette linens, new artwork and the addition of the palatial Jonquil Suite, a 3,290-square-foot oceanfront retreat with two master bedrooms, a full-service kitchen and a private freshwater infinity pool.

A 179-acre luxury resort, Belmond Cap Juluca is located along a pristine stretch of beach known as Maundays Bay, located on the southwest coast Anguilla. The view seen from every one of its guest rooms is worth writing home about — each one faces the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, which can make for an ultra-soothing morning wake-up call. An attentive — but not intrusive — staff, several restaurants, beach bars and loads of activities attract repeat guests, including the Hollywood elite. Domed buildings appointed with Moroccan rugs and lanterns and surrounded by lush greenery and Caribbean flowers add to the resort’s dramatic look.

The Rooms

Sixty-nine spacious guest rooms are housed in Moorish-style, two-story whitewashed villas overlooking the white pristine beach. Room categories range from standard 700-square-foot spaces to lavish suites with private pools. All Belmond Cap Juluca rooms have ocean views, direct beach access and are air-conditioned. Some have bathtubs built for two that lead to a private sun terrace. Inside, white walls and white tiled floors are offset by bright splashes of color, abstract art pieces and dark-wood louvered windows.

The Food

Often dining options can seem less than stellar at secluded island resorts, but the restaurants at Belmond Cap Juluca are worthy of a visit. The elegant Pimms serves European- and Caribbean-inspired dishes, such as green peppercorn-marinated swordfish, in a breezy, open-air space (book a table in time to catch the magnificent sunset views). Hit up Spice for Pan-Asian cuisine, and Blue and Maundays for beachfront dining and live music. Private beach dining is a popular choice, too, and the resort will erect a torch-lit table for two on the sugary white sand.

The Amenities

Sunbathers and swimmers alike will want to take advantage of the resort’s 1,800-square-foot pool and the crescent-shaped beach with personal service that includes the delivery of complimentary chilled towels, sorbet and icy bottled water. Also complimentary to Belmond Cap Juluca guests? All water sports, including snorkeling, water skiing and Hobie Cat sailing.

A list of seemingly endless activities and amenities includes day and night tennis, beach volleyball, access to a nearby Greg Norman-designed golf course, a six-treatment room spa, a fitness center, outdoor yoga, afternoon tea served on the Main House’s terrace, nightly movies, croquet, horticultural tours, and daily boat excursions to experience snorkeling with tropical fish.
