The quiet, tree-lined streets and Greek Revival houses lend an air of the old antebellum South to Athens. This was the first major Alabama town to be occupied by Union troops in the Civil War (1862). It was also the first Alabama city to get electricity (1934) from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Electrification soon spread to the surrounding area, aiding in the development of light manufacturing.
