Auburn took its name from the opening line in Oliver Goldsmith's poem, "The Deserted Village," which reads "Sweet Auburn, the loveliest village of the plain. . ." Located on the southeastern slope of the Piedmont plateau, this trading and university community is graced with Greek Revival, Victorian, and early 20th-century architecture.
