An exotic spa retreat in Bali

13 Treatment Rooms

Located on the jungle-fringed grounds of COMO Shambhala Estate near Ubud, the COMO Shambhala spa rejuvenation experience is set in nature and peace. A tempting assortment of facials, massages, body care and beauty treatments all have one focus — to balance the mind, body and spirit.

Additional wellness activities like yoga, Pilates and pranayama breathing lessons tempt you into spending all day at the spa. Overwhelmed by treatment options? Don’t worry, a personal consultant will guide you to choosing the right services for enhancing your individual well-being.

The Facilities

There are nine beautifully appointed indoor treatment rooms and — if you want more contact with nature and desire listening to the rustling of palm fronds and singing birds — four outdoor treatment pavilions. Yoga is also offered at the yoga bale or the yoga pavilion and Pilates at the dedicated studio. The resort also has an indoor gym plus an outdoor jungle gym and climbing wall.

At COMO Shambhala,  take dip in the popular therapeutic vitality pool. Here, six water-jet underwater chairs massage the back stomach and feet, while two water fountains function to complete your water therapy treatment, which is about a 45-minute supervised service.

You can also swim in the 82-foot lap pool where you can warm up your muscles before a serious body treatment or just relax in the steam room and sauna. Before or after a treatment, take time to unwind in the relaxation area, too.

The Treatments

There are a slew of treatments at the Bali spa, ranging from Asian-inspired specialties to Western holistic services. Standouts include an invigorating Hot River Stone Massage (the stones are harvested from the Ayung River, which provides perfectly sized natural pebbles). This warming body treatment will remove tensions or knots in your muscles, and under expert therapist guidance, stretches are incorporated into the treatment to help rebalance the body.

The Indonesian Massage uses rolling and kneading strokes that are both therapeutic and deeply relaxing. The indulgent Javanese Royal Lulur Bath involves a massage, a body scrub made from local spices, a cooling yogurt application, a flower-filled bath and application of body lotion.

Facials are a choice option, too. Several use renowned French beauty brand Guinot and the Ayurvedic-based line Sundari. More exotic and wellness-focused treatments are available as well, including acupuncture, Ayurvedic therapy and hydrotherapy.

Pairs also can indulge together in one of the three couples treatment rooms. And while you won’t find this on the menu, it is possible to arrange a romantic service: Climb a 250-step ascent for a picnic with rugs and pillows at a natural rock swimming pool. In this setting, you can take a treatment and utterly relax in a secluded natural environment.

The Sacred Rite

Bali and water blessings go together, and the COMO offers something very special.  Partake in a water blessing at “the source,” a natural, 1,000-year-old spring on the grounds of the resort close to the Ayung River.

Sacred rites must be performed in traditional temple attire, so clothed in Balinese dress, you walk into another world as the local priest gives offerings to the gods at the property’s Ganesha statue. Chanting and rituals follow and then the priest sprinkles the holy water on you three times with a blessing.
