Named by its French founders for a red post that marked the boundary between the lands of two Native American tribes, Baton Rouge, the busy capital of Louisiana, is also a major Mississippi River port. Clinging to its gracious past, the area has restored antebellum mansions, gardens, tree-shaded campuses, splendid Cajun and Creole cuisine, and historic attractions that reflect the culture and struggle of living under ten flags over a period of three centuries.
