An elegant, historic estate in Bermuda
Rosedon Hotel, located steps from Bermuda’s capital city of Hamilton, is a charming 39-room inn that was built in 1906 as a private home. Seemingly no expense was spared and its original elegance endures. From the grand pillars in the entrance hall specially carved and imported from Chicago, to the California redwood, pine, oak and cherry woods found throughout various rooms.
Over the years, an additional wing and buildings were added, all of which frame a gorgeous pool and tropical gardens filled with eye-popping local plants, like blue passion flowers and Bermuda banana trees.
Service is spot-on, with some of the Bermudian staff having been at Rosedon for as long as 50 years.
The genteel, country estate vibe extends to the hotel’s rooms, which come in six different categories. All are decorated uniquely in classic English-meets-Bermudian fashion (wood floors, wicker tables, mahogany beds and floral patterns). A few are located in the main house, but most are within a garden setting facing the pool in the newer building behind the main house.
For a real flavor of the original era, choose to stay in the main house, where the rooms boast high ceilings and overlook the elegant entrance to the Bermuda hotel. There are more deluxe rooms located in the wing attached to the main house with balconies overlooking the pool and garden.
The five Royal Rooms are the most recent additional with bamboo wooden floors, four-post king beds, desks and have either a balcony or a patio. Amenities throughout the rooms include all-essential air conditioning, ceiling fans, iPod docks, flat-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi.
The luxury hotel doesn’t have a traditional dining room; the included-in-your-rate full-course breakfast is served in your room, patio or poolside under an umbrella.
Traditional afternoon tea (also complimentary) is set in the stately sitting room. Beau’s Bar, a well-stocked traditional honor bar with snacks, beer, spirits and the owner’s wine cellar, is accessible day or night. And if you do need a snack, Clarabell’s Pantry in the main house building is open all day, and it’s an ideal place to grab a quick sandwich or salad. Other food options include gourmet ice cream and sorbet.
Every Tuesday, the hotel hosts a rum swizzle party, a great ice-breaker for the guests. Another unique perk: Each gets a free roundtrip taxi ride to a pink-sand South Shore beach. (Tip: Request a picnic lunch and beach towels before heading out.) While there is no restaurant onsite, you can order a light dinner.
The brief stroll to the heart of the city makes getting to shops, bars and restaurants a snap.
Rosedon is a convenient retreat and the hotel offers a six-night holiday package year-round — it slightly changes according to the season. In summer, you will get champagne in your room upon arrival; a picnic lunch for two; admission to the Aquarium, Crystal Caves, Maritime Museum: a two-hour Sea Garden Cruise; as well as the standard Tuesday-evening rum swizzle party, daily breakfast, afternoon tea and ride to the beach.
During the winter, the only change is a box lunch for two, tickets to a Bermuda Festival performance (the fest runs from January to mid- February only) or a $40 dinner voucher, and a choice of a two-seater bike for the day or a second evening at the Bermuda Festival.
