The British Virgin Islands' sprawling oasis
12 Treatment Rooms
In search of optimal peace and relaxation, discerning travelers to the British Virgin Islands head to Spa at Peter Island, where therapists often induce guests into near-trance states. The 10,000-square-foot facility includes 10 indoor treatment rooms, two couples suites with private verandas, an infinity-edge pool and a tranquility garden.
Located within Peter Island Resort & Spa, which sits on a private 1,800-acre island dense with tropical foliage, the spa is popular with both guests of the resort and those who sail up and dock their boats at the tony yacht club in order to indulge in a day of total tranquility. Guests access the spa by walking along a hibiscus-lined road for the opportunity to choose from an exhaustive list of massages, scrubs, wraps, facials and Ayurvedic treatments.
Spacious indoor treatment rooms are equipped for services that can last for hours; some have doors that open up to private terraces with views of the water (ideal for listening to lapping waves). The roomy couples suites have side-by-side beds and deep hydrotherapy soaking tubs.
For an all-day getaway, enjoy lunch on the spa’s patio post-treatment before lounging in the curved pool overlooking the ocean.
The showstopping treatment rooms to book — whether you’re on your honeymoon or not — are the two open-air bohios, cabana-like structures located on an ultra-private path that meanders along the far edge of the island. Built with organic wood, the bohios have steps that lead to raised oversized tubs, outdoor showers, terraces for two with chaise lounges and outdoor soaking tubs perched above the blue waters of Big Reef Bay.
What sets the rambling luxury spa apart from others in the Caribbean is more than its size and stature (although those are impressive). First, the staff is an expert one, exuding unstudied warmth and calming professionalism. Second, the spa’s array of Ayurvedic treatments, an ancient alternative healing method, are performed by certified therapists from India. The Ayurvedic options are exotic — the Bolus Bag Massage starts with an application of warm oil before boiled bags of fragrant herbs are applied to the body, the Indian Head Massage aims to relax muscles and improve circulation to the head thereby stimulating hair growth. Eight different Ayurvedic packages are available, ranging from two-hour retreats to an array of treatments to be taken over the course of five days. Traditional types can indulge in more standard and Caribbean-inspired services, from age-defying facials and sea stone massages to fresh coconut scrubs and seaweed wraps.
If you’re booking a bohio, the five-hour Suite Retreat for two should put you into a state of total bliss. The experience includes a body scrub, soaking time in an oversized tub and either a massage performed with sea stones or a heated sand bundle. A spa lunch is then served on the private patio. Post-lunch, the treatment continues with the signature facial and pedicure. The result? Absolute serenity.
