International cooperation is rarely as warm and helpful as it is between Calais (KAL-iss) and St. Stephen, New Brunswick, just across the St. Croix River in Canada. Because of an early closing law in St. Stephen, Canadians stroll over to the United States for a nightcap, and fire engines and ambulances cross the International Bridge in both directions as needed. (For Border Crossing Regulations, see MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR TRIP.)
Note: New Brunswick is on Atlantic Time, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time.
Calais has a unique distinction--it is located exactly halfway between the North Pole and the equator. The 45th Parallel passes a few miles south of town; a marker on Highway 1 near Perry indicates the spot. Bass, togue, trout, and salmon fishing is available in many lakes and streams in Calais, and there is swimming at Meddybemps Lake, 13 miles north on Highway 191.
