Our Forbes Travel Guide editors feel that a body balm or other product made from the native aloe vera plant is the best thing to bring home from the Canary Islands. This special plant, which loosely resembles a cactus but is actually a member of the lily family, contains a gel within its thick leaves that is commonly applied as an anti-flammatory and antiseptic agent. It’s been cultivated on the islands for centuries – Christopher Columbus would load his vessels with as many aloe vera plants as possible when he stopped here – and today it’s one of the Spanish archipelago’s key exports. Other souvenirs to keep a lookout for include bracelets and necklaces made from lava stone, handicrafts or a bottle or two of the locally produced (and underrated) wines.
