It wasn't long ago that this now-stunning 1904 Beaux Arts building was a run-down property that seemed destined for decay. But a $60 million, five-year renovation project headed by architect David Rockwell breathed brand-new life into the hotel. Today, the three-story lobby and lounge areas are bathed in opulent golds and creams, and the sound of the cascading waterfall here serves as a soothing background soundtrack. Rooms are all about what's plush and new, with Frette bedding, free Wi-Fi and iHome systems. But preserving the hotel's original décor was important, too: An ornate 28-foot Tiffany stained-glass dome, discovered during renovations under such thick layers of dirt and tobacco tar that it was thought to be painted black, has been restored and now sits atop chef Geoffrey Zakarian's acclaimed restaurant, Country.
