Clayton, a central suburb of St. Louis, was first settled by Virginia-born Ralph Clayton, for whom the city is named. In 1877, the budding town became the seat of St. Louis County when Clayton and another early settler, Martin Hanley, donated part of their land for a new courthouse. Today, Clayton is a major suburban St. Louis residential and business center.
