One of the highest golf courses in North America is Cloudcroft's most publicized claim to distinction, but this is also a recreation area for non-golfers. It is at the crest of the Sacramento Mountains in the Lincoln National Forest, among fir, spruce, pine, and aspen. A Ranger District office of the forest is located here. The area is popular with writers, photographers, and artists. Several art schools conduct summer workshops here. There are many miles of horseback trails through the mountains, and skiing, snowmobiling, and skating in winter. Deer, elk, turkey, and bear hunting is good in season. Several campgrounds are located in the surrounding forest. During the day temperatures seldom reach 80° F; nights are always crisp and cool.
