As the last outfitting place on the Santa Fe Trail between the Missouri River and Santa Fe, Council Grove, now a National Historic Landmark, holds historic significance in the development of the West. The town grew up around a Native American campground in a grove of oaks near the Neosho River and is now an agricultural and merchandising center. The town also has many lovely turn-of-the-century buildings, several parks, and two lakes.
