When they say “everything is bigger is Texas,” they sure do mean it! Dallas isn’t just big in population, but also big in how spread out and wide it is. Don’t think of Dallas like New York City, where you can really just walk everywhere, take a taxi or ride the subway. Nothing is within walking distance since everything is so spread out, so therefore, yes, you do need to rent a car!

Depending on which Dallas airport you fly into, each one has car rental services right there at the airport. If you don’t want to rent a car at the airport, you can be sure to find a shuttle service that makes routine trips to different rental car locations around, but mostly in the downtown area. Driving in Dallas is fairly easy and it's not too difficult to get around. Don’t panic if you get lost though — the locals will be more than willing to help you find your way.

Navigating the city of Dallas without a car is not for the faint of heart but it can be done – in certain areas. Generally speaking, yes, you should absolutely rent a car when visiting. Dallas is an expansive city with far-flung neighborhoods connected by a constantly growing network of highways and toll roads.

The areas that are most easily navigated without a car are Downtown, the West Village, and parts of Uptown. These neighborhoods are pedestrian-friendly with places for living, working, and playing all within close proximity. However, don’t let the flat landscape fool you. Many times destinations are a lot farther away than they look to the naked eye.The Arts District is connected to Uptown and the West Village by the McKinney Avenue trolley which is free to ride. Also, the DART light rail tends to stop closer to areas of interest in these three neighborhoods and won’t leave you in store for a long hike.
