You’d expect to find a restaurant like the Green Room located in a refined European city. And with good reason: Hotel du Pont, the restaurant’s home, was modeled after European luxury hotels in the early 20th century.
The Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant instead resides in Wilmington, Delaware’s largest city, also the birthplace of DuPont. (The chemical giant built the hotel partly to house its business clients.) Located at 11th and Market streets, the French restaurant sits on Rodney Square, which in June hosts the city’s Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, and it’s steps from several bank headquarters, including the Bank of America offices. It’s a decidedly business-like setting, but it’s also a stately one. The restaurant’s neighbors, the Wilmington Public Library and the former city courthouse (now a law firm’s office) both evoke ancient Greek temples.
The Green Room is to the left of the plush lobby and an easy walk from the DuPont Theatre, also housed in the hotel. It’s also within walking distance of the Grand Opera House on Market Street, which hosts comedians such as Wanda Sykes and performers such as Bonnie Raitt. Planning dinner and a show is a snap, and you can return to the lobby bar for a nightcap.
The Wilmington restaurant offers valet parking. Or, choose from two parking garages a block away.
