Room service at MGM Grand Detroit isn’t as extensive as at some large hotels, but we were very impressed with the quality of the food served, notably at dinner time. You can enjoy breakfast in your room from 6 to 11 a.m. with dishes including made-to-order omelets, steel-cut oatmeal with apple compote and buttermilk pancakes with seasonal berries, and a grilled New York strip steak with eggs any style. The all-day dining menu then goes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (or all the way until 6 a.m. on weekends for non-stop dining), and includes standard American favorites like create-your-own pizzas, a grilled burger, a turkey stack sandwich with bacon and cheddar, fried chicken wings with hot sauce, Michigan’s Maurice salad and shrimp cocktail for appetizers. Entrées are amply portioned and are more upscale in terms of flavor and look — you’ll find hearty plates like a center-cut filet with garlic-herb butter and potato puree, pan-seared salmon with penne and leeks, spinach and tomato, and a surprisingly tasty chicken fettuccine Alfredo with asparagus, crimini mushrooms and Parmesan cream. Desserts, too, are a cut with creative choices like Caribbean pineapple key lime pie custard, Bananas Foster cheesecake with candied pecans or the chocolate truffle torte with raspberry Chambord sauce. While we’re willing to bet you enjoy the food, we also think you’ll be impressed with the quality of service — expect the staff to perform thoughtful gestures like pouring your water and asking if you enjoyed the meal when they take away your tray.
