For a true smorgasbord of patrons, this Kenmore Square spot is it. You’ll find every
type, from students to financial power players. They’re all sucking down classic
cocktails and nibbling on hanger steak frites at the bar. The staff buzzes through
all the commotion in the cavernous, red-accented dining room in vintage skirts
or classic bartender vests, carrying a whirlwind of aromatic comfort food at every
pass. From meatloaf and mashed potatoes to beef short-rib bourguignon, the menu
hits all the classics. There’s also a raw bar and a bar menu for lighter fare (including
a superb Reuben made with Guinness-braised corned beef). The “Standard” burger
is anything but, perched on a brioche bun with cheddar slathered on top, and you
can’t go wrong with the salt cod fritters (ask for an extra dollop of the spicy ketchup).
The outdoor patio is a prime warm weather people-watching spot, but be wary on
game days; the place gets mobbed hours before the first pitch.
