What events should we attend at the New York City Wine & Food Festival?

The New York City Wine & Food Festival kicks off on October 11 with the first of four jam-packed days of, well, lots of wine, food and star chefs appearing at a wide range of events. We’ve picked the highlights for each day to make it easier for you to take a bite out of this Big Apple festival.

Food Network and Cooking Channel star Giada De Laurentiis will be your guide for S. Pellegrino’s Meatball Madness, a walk-around tasting being served on Thursday. Chefs from all corners of NYC will put personal twists on classic and worldwide meatball recipes vying for the title of 2012 Master of Meatball Madness. But watch out, competitors — 2011 champions The Meatball Shop are back and ready to defend their juicy crown.

On Friday, Los Angeles food mogul and Forbes Travel Guide Tastemaker Roy Choi teams up with Jean-Georges and Marja Vongerichten for an unreal feast called Bank of America Dinner Series: Coast 2 Coast Korean-Inspired Dinner. If the cuisine at the Wine Spectator-sponsored event doesn’t blow you away (and how couldn’t it?), the view from the 51st floor of the Bank of American Tower — the second-tallest skyscraper in the city — most certainly will.

During Food Network’s Next Iron Chef competition on Saturday, challengers will brave the heat of Kitchen Stadium and face off against Chef Geoffrey Zakarian, Michael Symon and legendary Iron Chef Morimoto. Gastronomy is the theme of the battle so rest assured you’ll be able to sample some very interesting concoctions from the entire roster of participants. You might even be able to tie on an apron and become a culinary gladiator yourself. Beware — tickets for this Alton Brown-hosted showdown are tough to find.

When it’s time for some Sunday supper, head on down to Chelsea Piers, settle into the gorgeous Pier Sixty and forget any thoughts you may have about notching your belt. For Paula Deen Brunch, the Southern cooking icon’s sons Jamie and Bobby will tweak their mama’s famous dishes into leaner and more-healthy fare, without removing any of the charm or flavor, of course.

    What is Zarkana about?

While continuing the Cirque du Soleil tradition of jaw-dropping acrobatics and amazing demonstrations of balance and physical strength, Zarkana tells the tale of magician Zark, who is on a quest to regain his powers and a loved one. An abandoned theater sets the stage for more than 75 international performers’ seemingly super-human feats: Jump ropers teeter perilously on a tight rope while fire blasts in the background. And a colorful array of jugglers and acrobats perform in front of mesmerizing backdrops that seem to morph as each scene changes.

Is there a discount for groups purchasing tickets to Zarkana?

Gathering a group of 12 or more Cirque du Soleil fans to see Zarkana, the latest edition of the show to hit Las Vegas, will allow you to reap a couple of benefits. If you choose to attend any of the show’s preview dates beginning Nov. 1, 2012, your group will receive a 10 percent discount on tickets priced at $180, $150, $140 and $130. These tickets must be purchased more than 14 days in advance of the performance date. When the show kicks off its grand opening on Nov. 11, 2012, the group (again, of 12 or more) ticket prices of $180, $150, $140 and $130 are still in place, but a live entertainment tax of 10 percent will be charged. A one-time fee of $15 is also added on with group orders, but all other fees are waived.

What can I expect to see at Zarkana?

Zarkana stays very faithful to the Cirque du Soleil lineage, meaning that you’re sure to witness feats of almost super-human acrobatics and prop performances, and feast your eyes on visually stunning backdrops and costume design. The Las Vegas show involves a cast of more than 75 international performers who jump rope while balancing on tight ropes — as fire rages in the background — and flip and twist countless times from trapeze to trapeze, as well as juggle objects of all shapes and sizes.
