What is the design style of The Blackwell?

Common areas of The Blackwell reflect the rooms’ Arts and Crafts/American Craftsman style, and upcoming renovations will further cement that theme throughout the building. The local art featured throughout the halls, main lobby and other public areas is vibrant and engaging, while the black-and-white architectural photography provides a soft, subtle touch.

Even though it’s a campus-area hotel, The Blackwell strives to avoid an overly collegiate feel. The only visual concession to the Columbus’s football obsession can be found in the hotel’s gift shop, where a plethora of Buckeye football gear can be found next to snacks, drinks and extra toiletries.

Outside, The Blackwell’s design is a bit incongruent with its beautiful interior. Its square shape and brick exterior blend seamlessly with the rest of the buildings on the Fisher College of Business campus. The curved valet drive and a small, stylized sign are the only indicators of the elegance that resides within.

    Where is The Blackwell located?

The Blackwell is located on the northern end of Columbus’s University District, on the west side of the Fisher College of Business campus at The Ohio State University. The famed Ohio Stadium, also known as The Horseshoe or simply “The ’Shoe,” is home to The Ohio State Buckeyes and is visible from the hotel’s west-facing rooms. Rooms on that side of the hotel also look out on other campus sports buildings, including St. John’s Arena. East-facing rooms look out over Fisher’s campus and gorgeous green space.

The Ohio State University is located north of downtown Columbus and the trendy Short North Arts District and south of the quiet Clintonville neighborhood. The Blackwell is within walkable distance of most university buildings and shops, but comfortable shoes are advised; the campus is one of the nation’s largest.

What’s the best time to visit The Blackwell?

Given The Blackwell’s spectacular proximity to the Ohio Stadium, it should come as no surprise that the 151 rooms fill up almost immediately for home football game weekends. If you want to score a spot, be sure to call within the first hour or two after they go on sale the Tuesday after the BCS National Championship Game in January. Likewise, graduation weekend at The Ohio State University books solid in less than an hour after sales open, and move-in weekend is another big one.

Fortunately, being on a college campus means that summer months and major holidays usually have good availability, as most students go home to visit their families, not the other way around. Colder Ohio winters also mean good availability in Columbus’s hotels. The city offers a great variety of events and festivals during these off months, including the Arnold Sports Festival in late February/early March, the Memorial Tournament in late May/early June, the Ohio State Fair in late July/early August, and the Dublin Irish Festival in August.
