We would highly recommend Herons, at the Umstead Hotel and Spa, particularly a table on the terrace overlooking the beautiful lake, if the weather is nice. What should I pack for a trip to Raleigh-Durham?

North Carolina has four distinct seasons, with spring and fall being temperate and nice, summer being rather warm and winter being chilly. We would suggest to pack for the weather and also for what you are coming to the area for. Hiking or walking shoes are a good idea if you would like to enjoy Umstead State Park and our other nearby natural resources.

What are the five best free things to do in Raleigh-Durham?

Since we are blessed with such nice weather much of the year, there are many outdoor activities that can be enjoyed complimentary. The extensive Greenway Trail System consists of scenic, woodland paths that meander throughout the area, even connecting to Umstead State Park and the American Tobacco Trail in Durham. These trails are the perfect way to explore the area by foot, bike or horseback. Another way to enjoy the flora and fauna of the area is a visit to the JC Raulston Botanical Garden, which is adjacent to the North Carolina State University campus. A wide variety of native and exotic plants and flowers make for a wonderful experience in nature.

The permanent collection at the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) is open to the public at no charge as well. With over 30 works by famed sculptor Auguste Rodin, European paintings from the Renaissance to the 19th century, Egyptian art, ancient Greek and Roman work, and an impressive collection of contemporary works, the NCMA is an amazing free cultural outing. The museum expanded in April 2010 to a modern, light-filled 127,000-square-foot space, designed by New York-based architects Thomas Phifer and Partners.

On the first Friday of each month, Raleigh also holds “First Friday,” a chance to explore all the art galleries and museums in the downtown and Glenwood South areas at no charge. Galleries are open late during this self-guided walking tour and often offer complimentary food and drink.

We are also very fortunate to have the Southeast’s largest natural history museum in downtown Raleigh, which is open to the public at no charge. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences features four floors of exhibits, live animals, a nature-oriented shop and Acro Café. Highlights include the world’s most complete Acrocanthosaurus dinosaur, a two-story waterfall and the Living Conservatory, which is buzzing with hummingbirds and butterflies.

Where is the best shopping in Raleigh-Durham?

We highly recommend two shopping centers in Raleigh: North Hills and Cameron Village. Both areas offer a variety of small, locally owned boutiques and restaurants that are a refreshing change from the chain-heavy malls in the area. They are both pedestrian-friendly, outdoor centers that feature fashion-forward clothing retailers, art galleries and sidewalk cafes.

What unique treatments are available at The Umstead Spa?

© The Five Star Travel Corporation The Umstead Spa offers a selection of spa experiences that are uniquely ours. The Umstead Body Ritual, which is 75 minutes long, begins with a refreshing body exfoliation with our signature Umstead Body Polish, followed by a cascading rinse from the overhead Vichy Shower. Our nourishing Umstead Body Butter is gently applied with long, flowing massage strokes for hydration. Next you are draped in a sheeted misted with our Umstead Mist as your therapist performs a soothing scalp massage.

Another wonderful treatment is the Red Flower Hammam Ritual, lasting 75 or 90 minutes. This ritual is based on the skincare practices of the Hammam bathhouses, tracing back to the ancient Roman Thermae. This ritual uses essential oils and begins with an exfoliation. Next, the body is cocooned in warm white clay, which cleanses and detoxifies the skin. Rich aromas of Moroccan mint tea and orange quince mist abound. This ritual concludes with a massage of cardamom amber oil used to warm and relax the body.

A third signature treatment is the Red Flower Japanese Ritual. This is founded on the principal of stimulating blood flow through the body by blending layers of exceptional ingredients and pure scents deeply into the skin. Your journey begins with the use of ginger grass bamboo scrub to exfoliate, energize and firm the body. Next, the body is cleansed with mimosa sea algae wash, followed by a mist to nourish and soften the skin. This extraordinary ritual concludes with a massage using Kinmoxei Silk Oil, which warms the body.
