Jim Beley brings 28 years of experience in hotel and restaurant management to his position as general manager of The Umstead Hotel and Spa. A native of New York state, Beley now calls Raleigh home with his wife of 23 years and his four children.

    What is involved in The Umstead Hotel and Spa’s turndown service?

    At turndown service, your blinds will be pulled, lamps will be turned on and your bed will be prepared for your evening slumber. Bottled waters will be placed on your bedside table as well as a piece of dark chocolate from the San Francisco chocolatier, TCHO. A lovely linen mat with slippers is placed next to your bed, while the television is turned on to play nature sounds and images to soothe you. A card depicting one of our signature pieces of artwork is placed on your pillow.

    What are the five best amenities for kids at The Umstead Hotel and Spa?

    There are plenty of amenities just for kids at The Unstead. These are the five best:

    Children are delighted to receive a plush woodland animal finger puppet upon their arrival to The Umstead Hotel and Spa.

    The nature path around our three-acre pond, including a butterfly garden and informational signage, is also a nice outing with children. The nearby Umstead State Park is also convenient for a more intense family hike.

    XBox 360 and Wii gaming consoles are available upon request in our guestrooms, which is great fun for children when combined with a few thoughtful treats from our in-room dining menu — warm chocolate chip cookies and milk, perhaps?

    In the summer months, our heated pool is certainly a welcome refreshment for families with children.

    Laundry bags are provided in the guest room closet. Dry cleaning, laundry and pressing service items picked up before 8:30 a.m. will be returned by 6 p.m. One-hour pressing services are also available.

    The Umstead pool offers the ultimate relaxation experience. Set among the trees, the spacious pool area features plentiful seating.     The Umstead Hotel, designed by Three Architecture in Dallas, is contemporary in design while also relating naturally to its woodland landscape. The exterior is crafted from cut limestone, including the open terrace overlooking our three-acre lake. The interior design of The Umstead Hotel and Spa, executed by Frank Nicholson of Boston, continues to relate to nature with a soothing, earth-tone palette, hand-crafted Italian furniture, custom-designed carpets and striking artwork.

    The average per person cost for a wedding is $185. This includes the following: premium brand open bar for four hours; an array of gourmet cheeses accented with fresh berries and a selection of specialty crackers and freshly baked baguettes; a variety of five butler passed hors d’ oeuvres, a glass of champagne to toast the bride and groom; wine service with dinner; a first course to include table side poured soup or salad; entrée selections to include up to three entrées or one duo entrée; a specially designed wedding cake served with a strawberry hand-dipped in chocolate; select coffee and assorted specialty hot teas offered with dessert; floor-length white or ivory table linens, ballroom chairs, decorative charger plates and votive candles; all local sales tax and service charge; and complimentary sleeping room for bride and groom on their wedding night.

    One of our more exquisitely decorated event venues is the Salon, an elegant room filled with natural light pouring in from lakefront windows. Brocade-lined walls, a modern Italian chandelier and fixtures, and a muted palette create an ideal setting for an intimate reception or dance.

    The Umstead Ballroom is an impressive, spacious venue for events. It has soaring ceilings, intricate custom carpeting, breathtaking lighting and space to create the ultimate party of your design. Smaller events will find our lovely Cedar and Sycamore rooms to be most warm and inviting.

    What are the five best things to do near The Umstead Hotel and Spa?

    The Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill) offers a tremendous variety of attractions. We would highly recommend two neighboring sites, William B. Umstead State Park for woodland hikes and picnics, and the stunning new North Carolina Museum of Art, featuring over 30 works by Auguste Rodin (and an the 164-acre Museum Park, dotted with sculpture). Other points of interest in the area include the new Contemporary Art Museum in downtown Raleigh, and the beautiful campus and gardens of Duke University. Finally, our area’s food scene is getting national attention, with Durham recently being named the small-city Foodie Capital of the U.S. by Bon Appetit magazine. From the locally sourced menus at award-winning restaurants such as Herons, Magnolia Grill, and Poole’s Diner, to the roving gourmet food trucks, a good meal is never far away.
