What are the best neighborhoods in Helsinki?

Terhi Ruuskanen The best neighborhoods in Helsinki are Eira, Ullanlinna, kaivopuisto, Punavuori and Töölö in the Southern parts of the city. Kulosaari, Munkkiniemi, Lehtisaari and Kuusisaari are a bit further away, but still worth of visiting.

    1. Eira, Ullanlinna, Kaivopuisto and Punavuori

Enjoying the most beautiful coastline of Helsinki this area is a must see. The area is very posh, in a down to Earth - Finnish way though. You can find small boutiques, cute cafes and old restaurants in the neighborhood. Most of the embassies are in Kaivopuisto. Punavuori is a little bit different though - it is hip and trendy, especially among young people. Fashion designers and copywriters have taken over the small business premises in the narrow streets.

    2. Töölö

Behind the Parliament house starts Töölö. The streets are wider than in Eira. Most of the buildings have been built between 1920's and 1940's. The neighborhood is full of good restaurants, but because it is quite big area you should know where to go for a dinner before hand.

    3. Kulosaari

Kulosaari is the best place in Eastern Helsinki. It is easy to visit by a metro. Only few stops away from the central station and you will step into greener village-like neighborhood. There are lots of small and usually old mansions by the sea. Have a dinner at 100 year old restaurant Kulosaari Casino.

    4. Munkkivuori, Lehtisaari and Kuusisaari

To reach these neighborhoods you have to head west. They are worth of visit, because there are interesting houses and lot of parks and walking routes. Rent a car or a bicycle, drive all day and stop for a picnic or a lunch. Some of the embassies are in Lehtisaari and Kuusisaari.

What is the tipping etiquette in Helsinki?

Tipping in Helsinki is not expected yet it is greatly appreciated. There wont be a "service" on the bill, because it is always included when ever you buy a meal or just a cup of coffee. The minimum salaries are quite good in Finland, so no need to feel bad about not tipping. Taxi drivers don't expect a tip after the drive and believe me you don't feel like tipping either, because the gap fares in Helsinki are the fifth most expensive in the world.

If you want to tip, feel free to do it - I'm sure you will get an extra smile if you do!

What is the weather like right now in Helsinki?

Finally the freeze is slowly giving up the white Helsinki. The sun is higher in the sky every day now making the snow melt extremely fast. Finns are spending more time outside now that the weather is warmer and sunnier. One of the great things to do in Helsinki is to take a long walk either in the city central or by the sea front - or both. Helsinki is a very walkable city. In this time of the year Ullanlinna and Eira are the prettiest places for long walks. Kaivopuisto is the best place to watch icebergs slowly melting into the sea.
