Don’t let the imposing columned exterior (designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh,
who also conceived New York’s Plaza Hotel), glittering chandeliers and opulent
trompe l’oeil ceilings fool you—this hotel is far from stuffy. Take it from black
lab Catie, the Copley Plaza’s “canine ambassador,” who greets guests from the
concierge desk. (Dog-loving guests can even sign up to take Catie on a walk.)
Following $34 million in upgrades to the circa-1912 hotel, the guest rooms include
minibars, windows that open (hello, fresh air!) and marble bathrooms. The traditional
styling, however—striped wallpaper, flowery bedding, mahogany furniture—has
stayed put. If you’re feeling flush, reserve a Fairmont Gold room, which comes with
upgraded room amenities and access to a private lounge with free refreshments.
