If you can’t quite spring for the upscale offerings of Topolobampo next door—or
maybe you want to save your money for Rick Bayless’ acclaimed margaritas (we don’t blame you)—you won’t feel cheated if you opt for Frontera Grill. The always popular
spot has a festive atmosphere with colorful walls and hanging papier-mâché
animals, which provides a perfect environment to enjoy the PBS chef’s housemade
moles and freshly ground corn tortillas. The menu features such mouthwatering fare
as Puerco Al Chipotle, a grilled pork loin in a red-bean chipotle sauce, and carne
Asada a la Oaxaquena, a grilled Angus rib steak marinated in red chile and served
with black beans and plantains. Be forewarned: The restaurant takes reservations
only for a limited number of tables, which explains the lines that form well before
the doors open for dinner.
