Gatlinburg has retained most of its mountain quaintness while turning its attention to tapping into the stream of tourists that flows through the town en route to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the country's most visited national park. The city has accommodations for 40,000 guests and a $22-million convention center. At the foot of Mount LeConte and at the head of the Pigeon River, Gatlinburg is noted for its many shops that make and sell mountain handicrafts--brooms, candles, candies, pottery, and furniture.
