It is said that more than 10,000 Gloucester men have been lost at sea in the last three centuries, which emphasizes how closely the community has been linked with seafaring. Today, it is still a leading fishing port—although the fast schooners made famous in Captains Courageous and countless romances have been replaced by diesel trawlers. Gloucester is also the center of an extensive summer resort area that includes the famous artists' colony of Rocky Neck.
