A luxe respite amid the red rocks
There isn’t much we can think of that’s more relaxing than a late afternoon stroll along the grounds of Gateway Canyons Resort. Beyond the obsessively maintained landscaping and omnipresent croaks of frogs, the property, almost without trying, serves as a haven for decompressing. Unaweep Canyon’s breathtaking red-rock formations bordering the resort have a lot to do with that. But if there’s anything here even halfway as soothing as the views, you can bet it’ll be found at The Spa at Gateway Canyons Resort. The symbolic center of this Colorado getaway, this sanctuary delivers well-maintained facilities and natural treatments that simply have a way of easing any stresses that Mother Nature can’t.
Gateway Canyons’ campus won’t overwhelm you with its size. The Southwestern-style structures have enough space between them that things never feel cramped. The adobe-inspired spa sits off to itself a little more than the other buildings. Inside the intimate spa, you’ll see rooms that don’t try to over-Zen you with gaudy trinkets or busy colors; instead, walls and floors are done in soft tans, brown leather chairs fill the waiting area and curtains have touches of green. As you snack on an apple and Evian water before your appointment, you’ll notice wood-framed mirrors and more natural accents. Throughout the changing areas and treatment rooms, the theme of modesty and oh-so-subtle sensory stimulation carry on.
When you have jaw-dropping mesas and the Dolores River in your backyard, it would be almost irresponsible not to include some of those natural properties in your treatments. So, as you’d expect, the Grand Junction spa doesn’t let the opportunity slip through its muscle-gripping hands; the place makes sure that detoxifying clay from the desert (Canyon River Mud Wrap) and tension-relieving river stones (Premier Palisade Ritual) are included in some of the services. But the spa doesn’t limit its massages and facials to ingredients found within the region; there’s also oils from Morocco (scalp treatments, hydrating masks) and Fiji (Dilo Rescue Wrap) to help round out a menu with the lone goal of restoring guests’ mind, body and soles after a busy day of hiking.
We don’t know if it’s the masseuse’s firm touch or merely the refreshing high desert air but, after your therapy, you’ll have this undying urge to re-create the magic that happened in the treatment room back at home. Thankfully, the spa anticipated that so it went ahead and thoughtfully stocked its store shelves with products from Body Bliss, Skin Authority and other respected lifestyle lines. Should you purchase the Farmhouse Fresh Whoopie Cream, we’re pretty confident you’ll be able to achieve some suppleness in the privacy of your own bathroom. Will your face radiate like it did after the Gateway Canyons Signature Facial? Probably not. But if you really think about it, getting another treatment at the spa is just one more reason why planning a return visit to Gateway Canyons should be done sooner rather than later.
