Often times you book a hotel for its proximity to popular attractions; however, the draw of The Inn at Dos Brisas is just the opposite — its seclusion. This 300-acre luxury ranch, in the tiny rural town of Washington, Texas, offers a getaway of horseback riding, mountain biking, or simply enjoying the nature surrounding the Spanish mission-style lodge and guestroom casitas. Horses roam the pastures freely, the bright Southern sky shines and a 10-acre organic farm and rose garden dot the landscape. There is very little reason to leave this Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel.
But if you want a distraction from the wildlife, or the inn’s Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star restaurant, the nearby town of Brenham (a 20-minute drive), and the slightly further Houston (a one-hour drive), both offer plenty of options. Washington is considered the birthplace of Texas (the state constitution was signed here in 1836), and so Brenham offers several history museums and attractions, including the Barrington Living History Farm, showing life on an 1850s cotton farm, and the Star of the Republic Museum. Brenham is also home to a number of antique shops and malls; visitors travel to the small city to search for vintage furnishings and clothes. Golf fans will be happy to hear that there are several courses close to the inn, so you can arrange to spend a day on the greens.
For sports fans, there is always the chance of catching a Houston Texans football game or an Astros baseball game. Houston is also home to an impressive zoo as well as the Museum of Natural Science. This major metropolis is not lacking in galleries, shopping and eateries, so if you feel like making the drive, there are more then enough activities to fill your day.
