Cliffside pampering on Mexico’s Pacific Coast
Built into the cliffs overlooking the magnificent Pacific Ocean, The Spa at Capella Ixtapa, located inside Capella Ixtapa, is a secluded getaway wrapped in a gorgeous, romantic setting. Inside the spa, the sound of the surf below echoes in the background mixed with the soft tinkling of wind chimes. The smell of exotic flowers hovers in the air. The décor is Mexican modern, with clean lines and soft earth tones and local artwork. Treatments are numerous and varied, but most focus on incorporating local, indigenous ingredients and therapies inspired by ancient Aztec healing traditions. The setting? It’s what spa dreams are made of — ocean views, gentle breezes, attentive service and utter serenity await. A dip in the spa’s Jacuzzi is an ideal way to prepare for total relaxation, and if you can’t bear to tear yourself away from the ocean views at almost every corner of the resort, ask for one of the open-air treatment rooms, which are smartly shaded from the sun.
The products used in the Ixtapa spa services are created from local herbs and flowers, such as cuetlaxochitl (or poinsettia), which translates to a thoroughly unique experience. The signature treatment is unlike any other — the Lemongrass & Toronjil Wrap Grass is a local healing remedy that aims to detox your body by increasing skin oxygenation, circulation and metabolic function. (Toronjil, or Mexican giant hyssop, has soft notes of lemon and mint that are said to be effective detoxers.) Different types of wraps and scrubs are each designed to reinvigorate both mind and body — the Aloe Cactus Sun Wrap will soothe those in discomfort from too much time in the sun, and the Supreme Relaxation Scrub involves a Mexican herb elixir, an acupressure scalp massage and an application of hydrating body lotion.
Facials run the gamut from anti-aging to deep-cleaning, and massages range from aromatherapy to reflexology to one performed with various minerals to relief tension.
Once your treatments are through and you’ve reached that perfect state of bliss, transition slowly back to the real world — start with a pedicure, or one of the other services available (manicures, hair cuts, waxing) at the in-house salon. Or spend some time in the sauna and sweat away any remaining toxins that might be left. But of course, you could also simply lie back on a chaise lounge by the pool, listen to the gulls and watch the sun set slowly over the Pacific — now that’s therapeutic.
