Chef/owner José Andrés is one of Spain’s greatest ambassadors, and the taste of a few of his dishes here at this Washington post will show you why. Credited with starting the tapas/small plates phenomenon, Jaleo offers more than 50 choices that run the gamut of taste, spice, and temperature. Notable samplings include the Apple and Manchego Cheese Salad, Gambas al Ajillo (garlic shrimp), and Serrano Ham on Tomato Bread. The all-Spanish wine list is affordable and full of high-quality wines that showcase the diversity of Spain’s indigenous grapes. If you’re not familiar with Spanish wines, the list graciously includes flavor profiles and taste characteristics of almost every wine. Also available is a great sherry selection. Jaleo is located next to the Shakespeare Theatre and close to the Verizon Center, making it perfect for a bite before or after a show. There’s also a live Flamenco show every Wednesday night.
