Jar might stand for “just another restaurant,” but there’s nothing derivative about this fabulous eatery from executive chef/owner Suzanne Tracht, a place that’s just right when you can’t handle another evening of small plates or you need some classic-but-high-end comfort food. With its excellent chophouse offerings—like the 16 oz. Kansas City steak and the signature pot roast with carrots and caramelized onions—Jar is more like a distillation of everything a fine neighborhood restaurant ought to be: a place that offers reliably great food and service, and a warm atmosphere. Okay, so this space is a little more sleek than your typical neighborhood spot but it’s still functional. Designed as a 1940s supper club, the décor is simple yet stylish with warm shades of brown and hints of orange throughout, black and white photography hanging on wood-paneled walls and brown bucket chairs. Cheese lovers would do well to head here on Monday for the Mozzarella menu, which features a number of scrumptious dishes that incorporate burrata and, of course, mozz, among other cheeses. Or wind down the weekend with Sunday’s burger night, when there’s also an eclectic mix of milkshakes. And no matter which day you go, have a cocktail—all the mixed drinks, from martinis to Manhattans, are nonpareil, much like the restaurant itself.
