Wandering into the Avalon Hotel is like taking a trip down midcentury modern memory lane, if Kelly Wearstler had been around back then for consultation. The famed interior designer’s first pet hotel project is decked out in pieces by George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi and Charles Eames. Just around the corner from stellar shopping strip Beverly Drive (not to be confused with Beverly Boulevard) and staple lunch spot Urth Caffé, the Avalon combines retro-chic style with contemporary aesthetics. Hollywood A-listers and Beverly Hills execs seeking a bit of downtime sip sweet and savory martinis by the hourglass-shaped pool in cushy cabanas. Wearstler plans to revise her original design in 2009 on everything from guest rooms to Blue on Blue, the acclaimed intimate restaurant. Meanwhile, new executive chef Scott Garrett—formerly of Viceroy’s Whist—has launched his own new offerings, including the “Kick The Blues” happy hour, where you can graze tasty tapas poolside (weekdays 4-7 p.m).
