Lakeville, located on Lake Wononscopomuc in the Litchfield Hills area, developed around a major blast furnace once owned by Ethan Allen. The furnace and nearby metals foundry cast many of the weapons used in the American Revolution as well as the guns for the USS Constellation. When the furnace was torn down in 1843, the first knife manufacturing factory was erected there. Nearby is the famous Hotchkiss School, a coed prep school.
