Several early settlements were combined to form Manhattan. Lying in a limestone bowl-shaped depression resulting from glacial action, the town developed as a trading center for farm products. Later, when the Rock Island Railroad extended a branch here, it became a shipping point. Kansas State University is in Manhattan; its forerunner, Bluemont Central College, opened in 1863.
