Manitou Springs's many mineral springs, familiar to the Native Americans, gave nearby Colorado Springs its name. The natives, attributing supernatural powers to the waters (Manitou is a Native American word for "Great Spirit"), once marked off the surrounding area as a sanctuary. Today, the town is a National Historic District and a popular tourist resort.
