Chef/owner Thomas John has created a jewel of a restaurant with Mantra, a low-lit, sexy restaurant set in a stunning turn-of-the-century former bank in Boston’s über-hip ladder district. Decked out in raw silk upholstery, with chainmail drapery and red crushed suede banquettes, Mantra is an exotic space that makes you feel wildly beautiful. The menu is a perfect blend of French technique and Indian accents like saffron, cumin, tamarind, and cloves, and the kitchen delivers aromatic dishes marked by exciting, deliciously bold flavor pairings. Desserts are wonderful and include such delights as vanilla bean kulfi, an Indian ice cream that has a delicate, dreamy creaminess.
