While most down-island Martha's Vineyard beaches are public, like State Beach and South Beach, other up-island ones are restricted. Residents can apply for a seasonal beach pass to them, but whether you’re enjoying fun in the sun at a private or public beach, the sand is the only thing that counts. Some of the best beaches on the island include Menemsha Beach, where the best sunsets are viewed. Head there early to grab a spot on the coast for an idyllic picnic and to watch the colors of the magnificent sunset. If you’re headed out for a day of fun with the family, grab your sunscreen and go to State Beach — and don’t forget to have a classic Vineyard moment by jumping off the Jaws Bridge in Oak Bluffs.
