You can almost picture the Rutledges having a drink and discussing politics
at this handsome restaurant located down a romantic alley in a brick structure
built back in 1788. It was originally a tavern before it was abandoned; it
was restored to its former glory in 1982, with a few modern touches added,
including a sky light and leather banquettes. The menu complements this
fresh take. Chef Sean Brock’s intoxicating dishes include beef tenderloin
with beets, garden onions and smoked hollandaise; halibut with lemon-truffle
emulsion; and scallops marinated in mango vinegar, avocado, crispy rice and chamomile. The tome of a wine list includes
many hard-to-find varieties. The bar is a sophisticated
spot for a glass of wine and a cheese plate,
or one of the unusual deserts such as peanut butter
cake with popcorn ice cream and salted caramel.
