Nestled in the green hills of California’s scenic Carmel Valley, Bernardus Winery is one of the region’s best-loved makers of fine wine. Since it was established in 1990 by Bernardus “Ben” Pon, the winery has specialized in creating chardonnay, pinot noir and a signature Bordeaux-style red blend that all perfectly reflect the Central Coast vineyards where the grapes were grown. The working winery is set high in the hills, but it isn’t open to the public (except for one day a year). But you are welcome to enter the large wooden doors bearing the Pon family crest on the Bernardus Winery tasting room, a separate facility on Carmel Valley Road. Inside, you’ll be welcomed by the tasting room staff — among the most friendly in the region — who are eager to tell you the Bernardus story and share its wines.
