Nantucket is not just an island; it is an experience. Nantucket Island is at once a popular resort and a living museum. Siasconset (SCON-set) and Nantucket Town remain quiet and charming despite heavy tourism. With 49 square miles of lovely beaches and green moors inland, Nantucket is south of Cape Cod, 30 miles at sea. The island was the world's greatest whaling port from the late 17th century until New Bedford became dominant in the early 1800s. Whaling prosperity built the towns; tourism maintains them.
There is regular car ferry and passenger service from Hyannis. If you plan to take your car, make an advance reservation with the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket Steamship Authority, PO Box 284, Woods Hole 02543; phone 508/477-8600. Keep in mind, though, that traffic has become severe. Bicycles and public transportation may be better alternatives.
