Historic Nantucket charm

Though Nantucket is a small island and most points within its charming Nantucket Town can be reached on foot, there's still something to be said for a prime location, and the historic Jared Coffin House, a Nantucket Island Resort, has one of the best in town. Perched at the top of Broad Street, the small-scaled 42-room inn (with 30 rooms in the main house and 12 next door in Daniel Webster House) is also an intimate place to stay. The antique charm that fills the first-floor library and second- and third-floor guest rooms is authentic; the inn was built in 1845 as the home of wealthy whaling-ship owner Jared Coffin, and it survived Nantucket’s devastating 1846 fire to become an inn shortly after the tragedy. It’s been welcoming guests ever since, though today it offers thoroughly modern amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi, flat-screen HD TVs and new (classically designed) furniture.

The historic mansion is located in the middle of downtown Nantucket, minutes from the waterfront and steps from charming cobblestone streets lined with shops, restaurants and galleries. It’s not hard to imagine that you’ve been transported back to the 19th century in this former whaling capital — and that feeling extends to the inside of Jared Coffin House, where you can settle into the library for “early riser” coffee and pastries in the morning or fresh lemonade in the afternoon.

Jared Coffin House also has the advantage of offering year-round accommodations, a rarity on an island where most hotels are seasonal. While the main house closes for the winter in late October, Daniel Webster House’s 12 guest rooms are open all year. Winter can be a charming time to visit, beginning with the island’s annual Christmas Stroll (which includes appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus, a tour of homes and a holiday market) two weekends after Thanksgiving. The luxury hotel is a cozy and convenient home base no matter the season of your Nantucket visit.
