Where Napa goes to exhale

5 Treatment Rooms

Tucked neatly in one of Calistoga’s wooden canyons, The Auberge Spa at Calistoga Ranch doesn’t hide the fact that it has a kinship with Mother Nature. Much like the rest of the oak-covered property, this sanctuary merely considers itself an extension of the great outdoors.

Here, closed spaces blend in seamlessly with exposed ones. Treatments unapologetically have a more traditional feel rather than conform to industry trends. So, be it through a 120-minute wrap or a brief respite on a lounge chair under moss-draped limbs, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star spa restores your vitality by removing the clutter.

The Setting

The spa sits at the top of the Four-Star Calistoga Ranch, An Auberge Resort, making it a good five-minute golf kart ride from the front lobby. On the mind-clearing trek (of course, you can always walk the lush campus), you’ll pass some accommodations and a gorgeous lake before getting to your final destination. After checking in for your appointment, take a peek at the logoed gifts and skin products from companies like Naturopathica and Pure Inventions.

When you step outside the reception area, wander around and spy copper, stone and preserved woods all over; it’ll feel more like an elaborate tree house than anything else. The open-air lounge, water fountains and five treatment rooms echo what you already know: this Napa spa is most concerned with developing your chi among the trees.

The Treatments

Of course, you’ll find yourself most centered when your muscles are being tended to. While the spa makes it a point to incorporate seasonal ingredients into its menu — the Fall Into Bliss experience, for example, incorporates a pumpkin spice mud wrap and honey-infused facial in October — the most popular offerings are ones you can try any time of year.

The Best of Auberge Facial is a rejuvenating 90-minute ride that includes a vitamin C peel and facial-sculpting massage. The Calistoga Cure consists of a body scrub, private bath and energy-balancing session. And as the name suggests, the Sensual Soak insists that couples enjoy a mineral pool, champagne and deeply relaxing aromatherapy massages.

The Pools

As you were getting acquainted with the spa earlier in your visit, you undoubtedly passed the heated mineral pool. The cozy amenity, roughly the size of a big Jacuzzi, is more about place than space. Sitting right at the edge of the facility, overlooking a creek and breathtaking tree lines, the pool is the ideal spot to float for hours before or after a service.

If you’re so inclined to sit in the calming waters during a service, you’re free to do that too in the form of an hour-long session filled with stretching and other gentle movements with an aquatic therapist.

At times, the gesturing will be a bit more dramatic in the nearby Watsu soaking pool. The reason for that is the weekly aqua yoga class taking place there. Between underwater mountain poses, though, you are free to take a leisurely dip. Afterward, scoot on over to the eucalyptus-scented sauna for even more decompressing.
