A Midtown hot spot with Old World charm

24 Tables

The Gin Parlour, a New York City restaurant serving up locally sourced ingredients with a flair for classic American cuisine, pays homage to the jazz and gin era of the 1920s.

Located off the lobby of the glamorous InterContinental New York Barclay hotel, the draw of The Gin Parlour is simple — the restaurant/bar combines friendly and attentive service, flavorful organic dishes, killer cocktails and a chic-but-casual ambiance. Whether you’re a guest at the hotel or in its buzzy Midtown neighborhood, it’s a good spot for an intimate dinner, lunch meeting with colleagues or a pour of one of the 88 gins on hand.

The menu is seasonal and there is a variety of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And it’s pretty convenient at almost any time of day — the restaurant opens daily at 6:30 a.m. and has extended bar hours until 1 a.m.

The Scene

While New York City is, of course, known to set cultural and culinary trends, The Gin Parlour manages to capture the city’s Old World charm. Recently reopened, the interior was renovated and now has an inviting and cozy sidebar lounge and circular open bar area, a nice touch for guests who are in the mood for cocktails and people watching, but not necessarily a full-blown dinner.

Although the New York City restaurant appears to be a quiet space to dine during the day, the lounge area is known to get quite social during the evening, particularly during the week for post-work drinks.

And about those drinks. This glam spot certainly serves up gin and lots of it. The expert bartenders are happy to share the legacy of gin and help you choose one to fit your palate (and your mood). Take your pick from a selection of gins or opt for a few Gin Parlour cocktail favorites such as the Midtown Apothecary, made with Uncle Val's Peppered Gin, yellow chartreuse, lime and Solerno blood orange liqueur served over aromatized cracked ice and botanicals. The Quintessential G&T features Ford's Gin made with Gin Parlour's signature cold brew tonic water and seasonal garnishes.

The Food

If you’re ready for a bit of an adventure on a plate, take note. The Gin Parlour’s menu includes a few classics, but with a twist. For instance, New York’s famous giant soft pretzel is transformed into the Alphabet City Soft Pretzel, which is made with mouthwatering truffle cheddar, garlic parsley, sea salt, pork slap beer cheese dip and whole grain mustard.

The Roasted Oyster "Duo" is an ode to the classic American Reuben sandwich but made Rockefeller-style with spinach and housemade corned beef. Then there’s a classic patty melt prepared with a grass-fed beef patty, seared tomato, and New York cheddar, Gruyère and Comté cheeses.

From small bites and plates featuring a healthy portion of chopped salad to entrées serving up some of the best braised pork in town, the menu features something for pretty much everyone. Hit the restaurant in the morning for an ample breakfast buffet or eat here for an elegant midday meal.
