An impressive five-story brick hotel that sits high atop Newport's Historic Hill, Hotel Viking is a place where the grandeur of the town’s storied past meets the ultimate in modern-day amenities: deluxe guest rooms, fine dining options, appealing event spaces and a lavish full-service spa.
The hotel opened in 1926 to meet the demand of the booming economy and burgeoning tourist industry in Newport in the 1920s. There was simply no structure to fit the city's growing needs, and many of the city's lodging options were susceptible to fire. Thus, it was decided that a palatial hotel would be built, and that brick would be the most prudent choice when constructing it. There was a contest to name the new hotel, with the word "Viking" winning out because it conveyed a sense of how the hotel was to be perceived: strong, stalwart and lasting.
In the 1960s, the Newport hotel received a sizable addition that allowed for several more guest rooms. In more recent years, the entire property has been fully renovated to provide visitors all the luxuries of present-day (including The Viking Ballroom and SpaTerre) while capturing the essence of the city in Roaring Twenties.
Hotel Viking has long remained a preeminent place for visitors in search of the ultimate upscale Newport experience. A popular choice for families and couples alike, Hotel Viking's stunning beauty continues to captivate as much as it did upon its much-celebrated opening.
