Norman was founded on April 22, 1889, in the famous land rush known as the "Oklahoma land run." The run opened what was once the Indian Territory to modern-day settlement. A year later the University of Oklahoma was founded. The city now offers numerous restaurants, museums, shopping areas, parks, and lodgings, as well as convention, conference, and symposium sites. The city of Norman has a well-balanced economy with education, oil, industry, tourism, high technology, research and development, and agriculture.
