About Oakland, California:
Oakland lies just across the bay from San Francisco. The port of Oakland has excellent facilities and caters to heavy Pacific trade. More than 1,500 factories help make Alameda County a leading manufacturing center. The Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) links suburban areas and Oakland with San Francisco. Once part of the Rancho San Antonio, a 48,000-acre domain of former Spanish cavalry sergeant Luis Maria Peralta, it was acquired as a townsite by Horace W. Carpentier, who named it for the evergreen oaks that marked the landscape.
