The Ojai Valley was first farmed by citrus and cattle ranchers after the Civil War. In the 1870s, publicity in Eastern newspapers initiated its popularity as a tourist haven and winter resort. Attracted by its quiet, rural beauty and proximity to urban centers, many artists, writers, and other creative people make their home in the Ojai Valley.
