Unless you have a private plane, you’ll have to rent a car and drive from the larger airports to the Outer Banks — and even if you do have your own jet, you’ll want to rent a car anyway. Your best bet is flying into Norfolk International Airport, which is about 90 miles from the barrier islands. Getting to the Outer Banks is easy if you live anywhere on the East Coast. It’s about a five-hour drive from Washington, D.C., and around nine hours from Savannah, Ga. If you’re coming from the south, you’ll hop aboard three ferries to get to the Outer Banks. No matter where you’re coming from and how you get there, you’ll need your car during your stay.
