It’s hard not to like the Outrigger Reef, especially given its prime spot right on the beach in Waikiki. Its spacious rooms, which are divided among three towers, are all appealing, with a contemporary tropical décor befitting the waterfront locale. The hotel also boasts exceptional amenities, including an extra-large swimming pool with hundreds of lounge chairs for sunbathing in the bright Hawaiian sun; lots of ocean fun, such as catamaran sails, surfing lessons, and canoe rides; plenty of on-site shopping; a children’s program packed with fun activities for the young set; and a spa with a variety of spoil-yourself treatments. Every Friday, the Outrigger serves up island culture with classes in lei-making, craft demonstrations, and talented locals performing Hawaiian music and dancing the hula. To keep guests well nourished and entertained, the hotel offers a variety of eating and drinking options. Patrons can grill their own steaks and seafood at the Shore Bird Restaurant and Beach Bar or dine on tasty Pacific Rim cuisine at the Ocean House Restaurant (see). For all this fun in paradise, the hotel charges a lower rate than you might expect in Hawaii, although it’s still not cheap.
