Payson sits at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, near Utah Lake. Mormons first settled the area after spending a night on the banks of Peteneet Creek. The surrounding farmlands produce fruit, milk, grain, and row crops; livestock is raised. Limestone and dolomite are dug in the vicinity for use in smelting iron.
